Proxima Profile: The Sound Department

Dear Gaming Enthusiasts and Proxima Community,

As a few of us are in motion at the moment, we’re putting a fresh spin on this week’s Newsletter and we think it will be a great way to get to know us. After all innovation in the face of challenges is the Proxima way.

What's New at Proxima?

In the last newsletter we mentioned another addition to our sound team, helping with the smooth handling of all things audible in Warship Jolly Roger. We thought it would be a great idea to profile some of the different departments within our team and why not start with an often overlooked but always crucial element: sound?

The core of the team now consists of three members lead by two of our North American contingent: Kyle Murdock (Audible, Mighty No. 9, Soundfall) and Jonny Tobin (Neopets, over 10 million streams on Spotify) who are Lead Audio Designer and Composer respectively. As Audio Designer Kyle is responsible for controlling all the audio and audio levels for everything that makes its way into the game from sound effects to dialogue as well as Jonny Tobin’s fantastic compositions.

Jonny is our composer, creating beautiful symphonics to accompany the action in each level of the game - you can hear Jonny’s work briefly in the trailer, but we promise the score for the game will go beyond expectations. Both these roles are mammoth tasks to undertake alone and that’s part of the reason we also brought Jason on board recently to help lighten the load. We’re really excited about the talents of each member of this team and already the Warship Jolly Roger is sounding like no other sci-fi on the market.

Remember you can listen to some of Kyle’s story on our podcast For the Players, available wherever you usually get your podcasts. Kyle of course hosts the show but he is also featured on EP3 so be sure to check it out. In his episode Kyle talks about his love of sound and special association with Hip-Hop which feeds into the game. You can also listen to Jonny’s music on Spotify and all good streaming services just search ‘Jonny Tobin’ to hear some of his keyboard magic.

Stay Connected

Please visit our website proxima.studio for more detail about the project. As well as Instagram and Twitter you can now also find us on Facebook because we’re more than just a studio; we're a community, your support means everything to us.

More to come

We’ll continue to bring you more profiles from other areas of the team over the next few weeks so you can hopefully get to know us some more and the different areas we work in. As an indie developer we’re not the biggest team though we’re growing slowly and organically for this reason each member within the team plays an important role.

Best regards,

The Proxima Team
